Lake Tahoe this thanksgiving week?
Im leaving the 22nd to Sacramento then driving to lake tahoe on the 23rd. Specifically, im staying in stateline on the mountain at The Ridge Tahoe. The resort is located on Heavenly Ski Resort, and they just bailed out of their opening date on the 21st. They said they plan on NOT opening this weekend. They are making snow and stuff and hopefully it will snow more. Im really bummed, cuz my resort was right next ot one of their lifts and it would be really convient. Im going to be in stateline (tahoe) from the 23rd to the night of the 28th. i was really hoping to snowboard so i need some alterntives to heavenly if im not their when they open. any encouragement or something. do you think it will snow or what
It may snow…there is always a chance. I wouldn’t hold your breath, though. Reno and Tahoe should be known for the ever changing weather by now…If you are for sure staying in Tahoe there are a lot of other resorts pretty close by that you can go to during the day that are at higher elevations. Like Boreal. Just East of Tahoe. Off Donner Pass. Let me know if you have any other questions about the area…I’d be glad to help!
i would just like to say thanks…..?
my son went to the Heavenly Ski Resort for a weeks holiday and also stayed overnight in San Francisco,he went with his school from London England.Whilst he was snowboarding he fell and broke his shoulder and i would like to say thanks for the kind people in America that looked after him so well and treated him so kindly .So a big thanks from a mum in England….
how kind of you
What is the best ski resort out of Aspen, Heavenly and Stratton?
I am considering a working holiday in one of the above places and would like to know the best resort in terms of younger crowds/nightlife, highest amounts of snowfall/powder and the largest amount of terrain. Just give me your opinions. Many Thanks
I haven’t been to Heavenly.
Stratton has no powder. It attracts a wide range of guests. There has been an upsurge of younger skiers and riders in the past few years due to the massive amounts of freestyle terrain added since 2003, but a good portion of the typical guests are people who are middle-aged or older, ski the groomers, and actually believe the black diamond slopes there are difficult. There is little good nightlife at Stratton except on weekends. There is even less in the surrounding towns. A lot of the bars close early and there are no clubs or places that can hold acts larger than a 2-man acoustic set. There are two other resorts within a 30 minute ride that offer more challenging terrain, but have much shorter runs. There are a few backcountry stashes near Stratton and in the general area as well. Some are kinda sketchy and a few are old closed ski areas that are great skiing after a good snowfall.
Aspen has a much better nightlife and the snow is definitely better as well. There is also a much wider range of terrain available in the Aspen area due to the fact there are more resorts. There is also considerable amounts of access to good backcountry terrain. There’s more at your fingertips in Aspen than at Stratton. In Aspen you can at least get public transportation to grocery stores and there is a lot of shops and stores in walking distance from the resort. At Stratton, Supermarkets, cinemas, decent pizza places, and the like are 20-30 minutes away. The typical Aspen guest has changed over the past few years as well. They still tend to be upscale, but not like the 80’s. I think the bigger party spots are still in Vail and Breck.

There used to be a multi-resort season pass for Tahoe ski places (eg Heavenly, Squaw, Northstar, etc)?
I can’t find it anymore. I last saw it maybe 6 years ago. It was a pretty massive price (around $2000) but surely way cheaper than buying individually seeing how Squaw is about $1000 alone. Too bad, it seemed like an uber luxury for ski fans to aspire to afford some day!
Also, I’m not referring to the epic pass. The Epic Pass only includes Heavenly as a tahoe-based resort. The pass I remember seeing had only resorts at Tahoe.
It’s called the epic pass and it works for 7 mountains and I dont think that it’s 2 grand i’m pretty sure
its a lot cheaper than that.
What is the best Lake Tahoe ski resort?
Is Squaw Valley or Heavenly better? Or, is one of the others even better? I’m trying to plan a trip with my wife and kids. My wife and 8 year old daughter are both beginning skiers.
Squaw is a better mountain IMO than Heavenly, but it is a more advanced mountain and can be extremely intimidating for beginners. If I were you, I’d go to Heavenly. I think they have the best ski school in the Tahoe area, and one of the best in the country. Its right in the middle of South Lake Tahoe, so there are a lot of good lodging options extremely close and things to do off the slopes. Plus, most of the mountain gives you spectacular views of the lake.
