Is Lake Tahoe Good for a Family Vacation ?

We have 2 kids, 1 14 months and the other 5 years. We typically go to Outerbanks NC for vacation for July 4th. We are considering Tahoe instead. How is the wheather in July? We are looking to rent a lake front house for 3k or less. is this feasible? what is there to do?

I answered your other question also- the weather is usually great in July- ideal in fact. You should be able to rent a nice place on the lake. There is tons to do, but of course, the kids will probably be happiest just splashing in the lake! You can take a boat ridde to Emerald bay on the MS Dixie or Tahoe Queen, go hiking at the Visitors Center where you can view the underwater world of the creek in a viewing area, rent bikes, drive over the mountain and explore Virginia City, stop in Carson City and go to the train museum and the Nevada Children’s museum….. plenty to do! have fun!!!

How would you recommend Lake Travis in Texas? Good for a Mini-Vacation from Houston? Party Scene? Expenses? Is there by any chance a place that you can go horseriding by the hour?

Yes, Lake Travis is beautiful and a lot of fun. Just 3 1/2 from Houston, makes it a great mini-vacation spot. It’s also just a short drive into Austin, The "Live Music Capital of the World," Just hit the places on 6th Street.

What car to rent for driving from Salt Lake City to Yellowstone?

This sounds like a silly question but thought I’d ask anyways.

I’ll be vacationing in the Salt Lake City and Yellowstone areas for about 10 days in September. The two of us will have only 2 suitcases. I estimate that we will drive about 1500 miles during our trip, so the car should be comfortable and easy to drive.

Given the altitude and perhaps mountainous driving should we rent a car with 6 cylinders (e.g. Chevy Impala) or will a 4 cylinder engine be adequate (Ford Focus)?

I wouldn’t worry too much about getting a 6-cyl.

Do your homework and you should be able to find a really good deal on a reasonable car. A Ford Focus or Chevy Cobalt will be plenty comfy for two people and could save you a ton of $$$
