Squaw Valley ski area in California claims that its lifts can move 48200 people per hour. If the average lift carries people about 210 m (vertically) higher, estimate the maximum total power needed. (Assume an average mass per person of 70 kg.)

mass transport rate of lift = m-dot = kg/hour = 48200*70
m-dot = 48200*70/3600 = kg/sec
rate of doing work (Power, P) = rate of increase in potential energy
P = m-dot (kg/s) * h * g = [48200*70/3600] *210 (meter) *9.8 [joule/s]
P = 1928803.33 watt
P = 1928.8 kilo watt
P = 1.929 mega watt
